Cited documents

See where every claim in an AI-written document comes from and ask for changes in plain language.

Documents written by the Co-Pilot cite the discussion they are based on: small numbered markers follow the claims, and clicking a marker shows the original contribution behind it. You never have to take a summary on faith — the source is one click away.

Check a citation

  1. In the document, click a citation marker at the end of a sentence.
  2. The transcript jumps to the cited passage and highlights it, so you can read the original words in context.

For a document built on a large scope — a cluster surface that draws on many discussions at once — clicking a marker instead opens a panel titled Evidence for this claim, which gathers the supporting contributions and differing views behind that claim.

You can also edit by hand. Click into the text and type directly; the toolbar above the document formats what you write — bold, headings, and lists are one click away.

Ask for changes in the chat

Tell the Co-Pilot in the chat what you want changed — for example "shorten the introduction" or "add a section on costs". The document updates, and every change is highlighted for your approval before it becomes final — see Review AI edits before they land. Citations stay in place when the text is rewritten.

Typing by hand, the toolbar's one-click rewrites, and chat requests are three routes into the same document — and both AI routes produce the same reviewable suggestions you accept or reject. Use whichever is quickest for the change at hand; Ask the Co-Pilot instead of clicking explains when the chat is the faster route.

Quick adjustments in the document

The toolbar above the document offers one-click rewrites:

  • Polish, Simplify, Shorter, Longer, and Translate.
  • Reading level — from Very simple to Academic.
  • Tone — for example Formal or Friendly.

These go through the same review, so you can reject a result you don't like.

When the text is ready, use Download document to export it — you choose whether in-text citations and a reference list are included.
